Increasing numbers of people are turning to self-build when it comes to creating something unique for themselves. In fact, according to a survey by the National Custom and Self-Build Association (NaCSBA) in October 2020, nearly a third of adults were interested in designing and constructing their own houses.

Finding the ideal piece of property might be difficult for individuals who want to build their own house. To make the procedure easier, the government has required local authorities to maintain Right to Build registers, which include information on anybody who has expressed an interest in a self-build project.

Given that the register was updated every three years, local authorities should include it in their planning responsibilities and allow for adequate self-build and custom-build sites to meet demand within three years.

In October 2020, the government announced that it would conduct a review of Right to Build, one that aims "to ensure local authorities give enough land and take appropriate consideration for self-build when making planning decisions."

When you are looking at building your own house, there are two options - self-building and having a custom build.  With a custom build, you work with an expert in designing and creating homes to get the property you need but don't have to do the work yourself.

You'll usually buy a development lot and work with the developer to create the ideal design. The project will be handled by the developer following this.

The main advantage of bespoke construction is that you can get the unique design you desire (or at least pick between various designs) without the stress of obtaining planning permission or managing the job yourself.
